On 13 March 2026, one of the finest films ever made about prostitution was released — perhaps the best produced in Spain on this subject. Based on a true story, it is a powerful and unsettling film that portrays the sexual exploitation of impoverished women in Madrid at the end of the nineteenth century. Yet it also reveals, with remarkable beauty, the heroism of a woman born in Mexico to an Anglo-Spanish family, Mariana Allsopp, who decides to devote herself to helping these women.The film is remarkable for many reasons: the outstanding performances of the actors, the carefully crafted script, and the strikingly beautiful cinematography.
The film brings before our eyes one of the most enduring themes of jurisprudential reflection: the tragedy of prostitution, closely linked to that of pornography. Many jurists and philosophers of law have devoted attention to this phenomenon because it touches on central questions such as human dignity, freedom, the inalienable character of certain rights, the value of the human body, the meaning of sexuality, and the problem of human trafficking. In Spain, Professor Francisco Carpintero Benítez has even dedicated an entire monograph to this issue.
Moreover, the debate on prostitution and brothels is particularly present in Spain today. Several recent scandals have revealed the existence of networks of sexual exploitation connected to politicians or individuals close to political power. These revelations have revived the discussion about the criminal responsibility of pimping, the prohibition of brothels, and the effective protection of victims of human trafficking.
But, above and beyond all that has been said, the film highlights the sense of human dignity and love for one's neighbor, rooted in God's love.

El pasado 13 de marzo de 2026 se estrenó una de las mejores películas sobre el tema de la prostitución, posiblemente la mejor que se ha hecho en España. Se trata de una película dura, basada en hechos reales, porque retrata la explotación sexual de mujeres desamparadas a finales del siglo XIX en Madrid, pero también muestra con una belleza indecible la heroicidad de una mujer nacida en México de familia anglo española, Mariana Allopp, que decide ayudar a estas mujeres. La película es una maravilla por muchos motivos: por la magistral interpretación de los protagonistas, por el cuidado guion y por la preciosa fotografía. La película pone ante nuestros ojos uno de los temas más clásicos de la reflexión iusfilosófica: el drama de la prostitución, íntimamente unido con el de la pornografía.
Numerosos juristas y filósofos del derecho han dedicado su atención a este fenómeno por su relación con cuestiones centrales como la dignidad humana, la libertad, el carácter irrenunciable de determinados derechos, el valor del propio cuerpo, el valor de la sexualidad, la trata de personas... En España, además, el debate sobre la prostitución y los prostíbulos se encuentra especialmente presente en la actualidad. Diversos escándalos recientes han puesto de manifiesto la existencia de redes de explotación sexual vinculadas a políticos o personas cercanas al poder, lo que ha reavivado la discusión sobre la responsabilidad penal del proxenetismo, la prohibición de los locales de prostitución y la protección efectiva de las víctimas de trata.
Por encima de todo, la película destaca el sentido de la dignidad humana y el amor al prójimo, arraigados en el amor de Dios.
Se trata de una magnífica película que puede servir a los estudiantes como punto de reflexión sobre la realidad social de la prostitución y los diversos modos de ayudar a las personas victimas de esta práctica.
