Pilar Zambrano (España)

Pilar Zambrano is a respected Spanish legal philosopher and Associate Professor (Profesora Titular) of Philosophy of Law at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, where she also serves as Deputy Director in her department. She holds a Doctorate in Law (Ph.D.) from the University of Navarra, where her doctoral research critically examined the notion of self-determination of one’s own life within political liberalism, engaging deeply with the philosophies of John Rawls and Ronald Dworkin. Zambrano’s scholarship lies at the intersection of legal theory, interpretation, human rights, ethical reasoning, and political philosophy. Her work often investigates the conditions under which legal discourse can be genuinely understood and justified, stressing the cognitive and normative foundations of legal interpretation. She has explored themes such as the intelligibility of law as a semantic and normative phenomenon, the relationship between law and morality, and the conceptual structure of fundamental rights in pluralist constitutional orders. Her publications include numerous articles and book chapters that engage with traditional and contemporary jurisprudential debates, critically interacting with legal semanticism, natural law insights, and debates on liberalism and rights. Across her research, Zambrano grapples with how law can remain both intelligible and normatively authoritative in contexts marked by moral and cultural pluralism, while also defending the rational justification of legal principles that protect fundamental human goods. She has written on topics such as dignity in legal argumentation, semantic conventionalism, and the objectivity of judicial interpretation, contributing to vibrant discussion in both Spanish and international legal philosophy circles. In addition to her academic work, she has taught courses on philosophical foundations of law, ethics, and human rights, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue among students and colleagues. Her intellectual contributions reflect a commitment to understanding law not merely as a set of rules but as a reasoned and reflective social practice that must reconcile normative ideals with the lived realities of democratic societies.
